For many, teaching is a rewarding job. For Phumza Lubobo, it’s a calling rooted in wonder, creativity, and a sense of purpose.
“From an early age, I was fascinated by how young children learn through play,” she shares. “Their curiosity, imagination, and joy in discovering the world inspired me to pursue early childhood education. I saw how foundational these early experiences are—not just academically, but emotionally and socially too.”
A joyful and inspiring space
We asked Phumza to describe her classroom in three words. She chose joyful, nurturing, and inspiring.
She creates a space where every child feels seen, heard, and supported. Through structured play and intentional routines, she helps scholars explore their potential and grow in self-confidence.
Learning through role-play
One of Phumza’s favourite classroom activities is role-playing with props. Research shows that role-play supports language development, emotional expression, and social skills. It also introduces real-world concepts in a way that feels natural, fun, and empowering.
“Whether they’re playing doctors, shopkeepers, or chefs, children naturally step into different roles,” she says. “They may be pretending—but they’re learning as they play.”
Everyday moments, lifelong skills
In Phumza’s classroom, everyday routines are full of growth opportunities. From packing their bags to leading group discussions, children are encouraged to be independent, responsible, and kind.
“I gently guide them with positive reinforcement and open-ended questions,” she explains, “helping them think for themselves and develop a sense of agency .”
Purposeful planning, playful learning
Behind every story, song, or creative task is a thoughtfully planned learning goal.
“I always start with the skills or concepts I want to develop,” says Phumza. “Then I find playful, hands-on ways to bring those to life.”
From transforming shape recognition into a treasure hunt to utilising art to develop fine motor skills, every activity is carefully designed to spark joy while supporting deeper learning.
Surprising transformations
Many parents are amazed when they see what learning looks like in Grade R.
“At first, it may seem like the children are just playing,” says Phumza, “but they’re actually learning to read, write, solve problems, and collaborate with others.”
Structured play builds focus, independence, and social-emotional skills that are essential for school and life.
Building strong foundations through Social-Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning is central to the Grade R experience. At this age, children are developing their sense of self and learning how to relate to others.
“We work on essential skills like empathy, self-regulation, resilience, and the ability to collaborate,” Phumza explains. “These aren’t just ‘extras’—they lay the groundwork for lifelong success.”
By teaching children to understand and manage their emotions, communicate effectively, and handle social situations with confidence, SPARK helps them grow into kind, capable, and emotionally intelligent individuals.
Moments that matter
One of Phumza’s proudest moments comes at the end of Term 1.
“Working with first-time scholars and seeing how quickly they grow in confidence and independence is so rewarding,” she shares. “It’s not just about pencil grip or early writing—it’s watching them find their voices and truly enjoy being at school.”
What stood out most was how naturally her scholars embraced SPARK’s five core values—service, persistence, achievement, responsibility, and kindness—and lived them out in their daily interactions.
