At just five years old, Moabi Mahlatsi, a SPARK Riversands Primary scholar, discovered his love for soccer. What started as a fun after-school activity quickly grew into a passion that has now taken him across the globe.
In August, Moabi proudly represented South Africa at the Celtic International Tournament in Glasgow, Scotland (23–24 August). His journey began in Grade R at SPARK Randpark Ridge, where he joined the Transition Football Club.
While balancing academics and sport can be challenging, Moabi has found a way to manage both.
“After training, I make sure to do my schoolwork daily,” he explains. He adds that the support from his school has been key to his success.
“During my training sessions, tournaments, and the trip to Scotland, they’ve supported me by letting me participate while also assisting me with my schoolwork.”
For his mother, Rebecca Mahlatsi, the decision to nurture his passion was made easier by the convenience of having extracurricular activities at SPARK Schools.
Rebecca shares that Moabi’s love for soccer was clear from the very beginning. She believes SPARK Schools played a vital role in his journey by ensuring he could join Transition Football Club directly through the school.
“Having the opportunity to train weekly while at school helped him a lot,” she explains. “The chance for him to experience soccer at a professional level has been amazing,” she says about his trip to Scotland.
SPARK Riversands Primary Principal, Zamajola Majola, beams with pride as she reflects on Moabi’s achievement.
“At SPARK Schools, we’re proud to support our scholars both in the classroom and beyond, helping them shine in all areas of life,” she says.
From after-school fun to international competition, Moabi’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity. Like his soccer heroes, Khuliso Mudau from Mamelodi Sundowns and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, we cannot wait to see Moabi continue to shine as he works toward his dream of one day playing for Sundowns.
